What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects multiple joints, including the small joints of the hands and feet. The body’s immune system attacks healthy cells in the body, causing painful inflammation and joint stiffness. Usually, the inflammatory attack begins in the lining of the joints called the synovium or synovial membranes. If left untreated, the inflammation can cause damage to the soft tissues such as tendons and ligaments surrounding the affected joints, and can permanently destroy the joints themselves.
